Why are there so many raccoons and squirrels in St. Catharines?

St. Catharines is called “The Garden City” for its many parks and gardens. Its mature trees, ravines and creek corridors, like Twelve Mile Creek, give raccoons, squirrels and skunks food and cover right next to houses. Older homes have aging soffits, vents and chimneys that animals can open easily. Neighbourhoods where wildlife problems are common:
  • Port Dalhousie and Lakeport: older homes near the lake and parks; raccoons in roofs and chimneys
  • Old Glenridge, Western Hill and downtown: mature trees close to rooflines; squirrels in soffits and attics
  • Merritton, Grantham and Secord Woods: decks, porches and sheds where skunks den
  • Martindale, Burleigh Hill and the west end: newer subdivisions next to green space; raccoons in garbage and green bins and under decks

How do you remove raccoons from a St. Catharines home?

We find the raccoon’s entry, often a torn roof vent, soffit corner or chimney, and check for babies first. Adults leave through a one-way door or are live-trapped. Babies are removed by hand and reunited with the mother. Then the opening is repaired and screened. Ontario law requires release within 1 km. Signs of raccoons:
  • Heavy thumping or walking in the attic at night
  • Torn shingles, roof vents, soffits or chimney caps
  • Droppings in one spot (a “latrine”) on the roof, deck or attic
  • Knocked-over garbage, green bins or lifted sod
Raccoon droppings can carry raccoon roundworm. Don’t clean them up without protection. More detail: Raccoon removal · What to do if a raccoon is living in your roof

How do you get squirrels out of an attic in St. Catharines?

We install a one-way door on the main entry hole so squirrels can leave but can’t get back in. We seal every other gap with chew-proof metal, and remove the door once the attic is empty. In nesting season we check for young before closing the last opening, so none are trapped inside. Signs of squirrels: scratching and running in the ceiling at dawn and dusk, chewed holes in soffits or fascia, and squirrels using a roof corner or vent. What should I do about a skunk under my deck?

Don’t block the hole while the skunk might be inside, especially in spring when it may have young. We confirm it’s denning, then use a one-way exit and close the space with buried L-shaped mesh. That stops it from digging back under the deck, porch or shed. More: Skunk removal · Can skunk spray make you sick?

Do you remove bats in St. Catharines?

Yes. Bats are removed with one-way exclusion devices, and the gaps they use are sealed. Timing is planned around the summer maternity season, when flightless pups are in the roost, and around protected species. If a bat touched someone, call Niagara Region Public Health. See bat removal.

Do you handle mice and rats in St. Catharines?

Yes. We use locked, tamper-resistant bait stations, check the outside of your home for entry points and seal small gaps during the visit. See mouse control in St. Catharines and across Niagara and rat control and removal. St. Catharines doesn’t have a rat rebate right now: its program ended in January 2023, and council has asked staff for a report on bringing one back.

How does the process work?

Every St. Catharines job follows the same order: you call, we inspect, you get a plan and a price, we remove the animals humanely, then we seal and repair the entry points. An included follow-up visit, usually about two weeks later, removes the one-way doors. Sealing is the step that keeps them out for good.
  1. Call 289-273-2251. Tell us what you’re hearing or seeing and where.
  2. Inspection. We check the roofline, vents, chimney, soffits, foundation and attic, confirm the animal and find every entry point.
  3. Quote. You get the plan and a firm price before any work starts. The inspection is $75–$100 plus HST and is credited toward wildlife work.
  4. Humane removal. One-way doors or live traps, with checks for young in season.
  5. Exclusion and repair. Entry points are sealed with heavy-gauge screening and metal flashing; vents and chimney caps are secured.
  6. Follow-up visit (included). About two weeks later, we come back to remove the one-way doors once the animals are out.
  7. 5-year guarantee on wildlife exclusion. Raccoons, squirrels, skunks and bats won’t get through any of the exclusion work we did. The guarantee covers only the spots we sealed. It doesn’t cover new openings from other causes, such as roof damage or shingles torn off later, and it doesn’t apply to mouse or rat control.

Frequently asked questions

How much does wildlife removal cost in St. Catharines?

Raccoon or squirrel removal with exclusion in St. Catharines typically costs $700 to $1,500 plus HST, with the smallest jobs around $500 and complex homes sometimes more. Skunk and bat jobs are quoted after inspection. The $75 to $100 plus HST inspection is credited toward wildlife work, and you get a firm price before work starts.

Is it legal to relocate a raccoon in St. Catharines?

Ontario rules require live-trapped nuisance wildlife to be released within 1 kilometre of where it was caught. Moving a raccoon across St. Catharines isn’t allowed. It also often separates a mother from her babies. That’s why we remove animals humanely and seal the entry instead.

When do raccoons have babies in Niagara?

Raccoons usually give birth from about March to June, often in attics and chimneys. The young stay in the den for roughly two months. Removal during this period must find and remove the babies with the mother, or they’ll be left behind.

How long does it take to get rid of squirrels in the attic?

Once a one-way door is installed on the main entry hole, most squirrels leave within a few days as they go out to feed. The door stays in place until all activity stops. Then we remove it and seal the last hole with chew-proof metal so no squirrel can return.

Can animals in the attic damage my house?

Yes. Raccoons tear vents, shingles and soffits and soil insulation. Squirrels chew wood, wiring and vents, which can create a fire risk. Both can let rain into the attic. The longer animals stay, the more insulation and repair work is usually needed.

Do you serve all of St. Catharines?

Yes. We serve homes and businesses across St. Catharines, including Port Dalhousie, Merritton, Grantham, Lakeport, Glenridge, downtown and the west end. We also cover the rest of the Niagara Region, including nearby Thorold and Niagara-on-the-Lake. Call 289-273-2251 to book an inspection.
